Brass bands have been on the Piranha agenda from practically day one – or rather, day two:

HeimatKlänge festival’s opening season in 1988 already featured the “King of Klezmer Trumpet” Frank London – together with both his old ensemble, Les Miserables Brass Band, and his new one, The Klezmatics. PIR18 HeimatKlänge – Native Sounds from the Heart of Europe includes recordings made by both of these ensembles while in Berlin at that time – one track even featuring both The Klezmatics and Les Miserables Brass Band together.

Relinquishing Les Miserables’ particular emphasis on brass music for The Klematics’ broader spectrum of acoustic colours when that band caught on as it did, London later came back to distinct brass sound with his Klezmer Brass Allstars under a variety of focuses: Di Shikere Kapelye – digging for the Eastern European roots of klezmer; Carnival Conspiracy – klezmer melting together with pop, New York-style; and Brotherhood of Brass – featuring Egypt’s Hasaballa Brass Band (who later went on to release The Drummers of the Nile in Town with fellow Piranha Records recording artist Mahmoud Fadl on the label, too).

And that still leaves us the Balkan brass – represented at Piranha Records by Fanfare Tirana and its Albanian Wedding explosion. Of course, the Balkans are also represented on Piranha Records by the plethora of gypsy brass that has been released on the label over the years – see also the BALKAN repertoire for more!
