The more things change, the more they stay the same! Bereft of his Nubian home by the waters of Aswan dam, master drummer Mahmoud Fadl began digging further into his musical roots. Hypnotic percussion in enchanting full band arrangements – relocated to London and then Berlin. Today he ranks among the most renowned ambassadors of Nubian music both old and new.

In the Aswan Bioscop cinema, a young boy gazes at the flickering monochrome images projecting the magic of the golden age of Egyptian film musicals onto the screen. The enticingly draped and bejewelled form of the legendary dancer Samia Gamal ignites his adoration. The singing of Farid El Atrache permeates his sensory faculties. Exiting into the bright afternoon sunlight, he hears the ubiquitous voice of Umm Kalthum emanating from a transistor radio in the neighbouring café. As he makes his way home, he stops to listen to the wailing tones of a mizmar accompanied by drummers playing at a street-corner. The year is 1965 and the young man is Mahmoud Fadl.

Fast-forward to today and you will find master percussionist Mahmoud Fadl busy in his own Kush studio, from where he conducts the rhythm research for his international recordings with the Nubian all-star ensemble Salamat, Arabic classical orchestras and the Drummers of the Nile, develops club mixes for his experimental United Nubians drum’n’DJ project, and contributes to the world of raks sharki, accompanying and arranging for many distinguished dancers, conducting workshops and seminars.

Born in 1955, Mahmoud Fadl is the descendant of a Nubian family rooted in the griot culture of the Battikol people. He was raised in the Egyptian cities of Aswan and Cairo and started his musical career as a musician and limbo dancer for Nubian and Arabic wedding celebrations. His outstanding talent for percussion soon made him a much sought-after musician for top Arabic orchestras and singers such as Ahmed Adawia and Nubian soul legend Ali Hassan Kuban.

After several international tours including guest appearances in Syria, Morocco and Greece, Mahmoud Fadl established himself in Europe to develop his own international solo career. Having released four albums with his group Salamat and five under his own name (including three with his Drummers of the Nile ensemble), the master drummer now works and travels between Cairo and Berlin.

In addition to his own releases, Mahmoud Fadl has appeared on albums by The Klezmatics and Maurice el Medioni, his project United Nubians is one of the most innovative developments of the vibrant Berlin club scene. He is a film actor, a fashion designer, a curator for the Musikschiff at Berlin’s booming hipster borough’s festival “48 Stunden Neukölln” and always open for more.

Quite a way from that boy in the old Aswan cinema so enticed by the golden age of Egyptian musicals – and still marching!
