Alba Griot Ensemble - Celtic folk meets Malian blues

The ALBA GRIOT ENSEMBLE adventure – the pioneering contribution leading afro-celtic fusion into the 21st century – had its genesis under the high and dry skies of Bamako, the capital of Mali.

The band consists of two Scottish guitarists, Mark Mulholland and Craig Ward, the Belgian double bassist Hannes d’Hoine and the Malian n’goni player and percussionist Yacouba Sissoko whereas their live line-up also includes percussionist Baba Sissoko.

Their "The Darkness between the Leaves" album comes out with a dream cast of local musicians from Mali, dropping in to add their hot and dusty magic; the world famous and long-time Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, Toumani and his brother Madou Sidiki Diabate, singer Pamela Badjogo, balaphon-player Lassana Diabate, percussionist Baba Sissoko and French keyboardist Jean-Philippe Dary.

“All you have is the road you took / And who you met along the way”, Mark Mulholland sings in the title track ‘Darkness Between The Leaves’. That wistful tone is characteristic of the album as whole.

We are excited to go along the Alba Griot Ensemble adventure by welcoming them under our Piranha Publishing.
