PICKS OF THE WEEK

BERLIN CALLING! Piranha Picks of the Week - WOMEX all-around

Thursday 26 OCTOBER – Saturday 28 OCTOBER

For once the original promo text – for there is no way to improve on it, not even here: „Based on the gloriously unhinged television interview from 1986, the opera’s text is a direct transcript of Melvyn Bragg's wine-soaked interview with the British painter. The original broadcast sent shockwaves through the art world, and became an instant classic. The pair discuss death, sexuality, and booze, as Bacon rips into the art world and lays bare his own incredible philosophy of life“. Sound interesting? „The Francis Bacon Opera“:

"'Life' in this 'society', being at best an utter bore and no aspect of 'society' being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and eliminate the male sex“, reads the first sentence of Valerie Solanas' "SCUM Manifesto". Did she really mean it? With "Feminista, Baby!", Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner take a look at the more comical aspects of the text and its themes. You tell us how much of 'em there are – comical aspects, we mean

„The Ocean is closed“. Which ocean? And what do you mean – closed? Honi soit qui mal y pense – obviously. But then again: With „The Ocean is closed“‘s experimental set-up, performance collective She She Pop wants to lead Art Music‘s little poltergeist Reinhold Friedl and his New Music heavies Zeitkratzer into waters hitherto unknown to them – tackle the musicians‘ usual routines, interfere, estrange them from their instruments. Lead them to new shores, new arrangements, new ways of being and doing. So, back to the question for the 9 piece bathing company – ocean? Which ocean? And what do you mean – closed?
