BERLIN CALLING! Piranha Picks of the Week - How the West was won

Thursday 16 NOVEMBER

Atmospheric German songs, both intelligent originals and well mastered covers of the likes of Hans Albers, with a regional touch – the Waterkant – and loads of melancholia if not the Blues – Hamburg's Tante Polly are still as much of an insider's tip that they haven't even got the usual plethora of youtube videos capturing their act properly yet. Wrongfully so! An impression:

And the Tuvan variation, quite regional, atmospheric and utterly deep as well – Huun Huur Tu:

Friday 17 NOVEMBER - PIRANHA SPECIAL

From "HeimatKlänge" to the stars! Or at least to the White House. "HeimatKlänge" veterans might remember the young gentleman @ 1:29 from "HeimatKlänge – Tiefer Süden" in 1998 – brillantly captured at the very exact moment he put down his trombone to do a little extra percussion:

He had picked up his instrument again when he walked in to serenade the Obama's at their place 24 years later:

The reigning champion of everything New Orleans:

It was one year after the band's inception – and another year after he had co-founded Huun Huur Tu, see above – that Albert Kuvezin met proto WOMEXican Lu Edmonds @ the WorldWide Music Days @ 1993 Berlin Independence Days – from which WOMEX sprang the next year. With Lu taking turns at the controls, Kuvezin developed his "kanzat kargyraa" throat singers outfit from Tuva, Yat-Kha, into the classic on the World Music circuit it is today. Now celebrating its first quarter century – "Ways of the Nomad – 25th Anniversary Tour":

It's not all that often that you see a figurehead of the Punk / Postpunk generation still at the top of their game these days. Peter Perrett of The Only Ones managed to do so brillantly with his comback album "How the West was won" – better seize the occasion!

Where: Badehaus Berlin, Revaler Strasse 99, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany // When: 20:00

It's the stuff that fairy tales are made of – from rags to riches via the streets of Paris, virtually every single cliche complied with all the way up to selling out each and every philharmonic hall of the country on the running tour of Germany. Except for Berlin Philharmonic, so far – excuse me!? Benjamin Clementine – Drama, Baby!

Where: Berliner Philharmonie, Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße 1, 10785 Berlin // When: 20:00
