Free! Music festival: Music should be free and should be freed again and again: freed of the restrictions that tonality or notational systems impose upon it, freed of the limitations of conventional instruments. These and many more aspects are being brought into light during the festival taking place from the 6th - 9th of April.

Friday 7th of April

One of the two days that we highlight from the Free!Music festival, is definately this one. With early evening until late night concerts from Baloji - one of the official WOMEX 2014 selected artists, The Blue Notes Tribute Orkestra, Thabang Tabane and Conlon Nancarrow, this is a day that should not be missed!

Sokratis Malamas is one of the most famous and renowned performers of his generation in Greece with a very personal music style that balances between old pearls from the Laiko genre to contemporary rock. For this concert in Berlin, Sokratis will perform some of his most famous pieces as well as interpretations of works by other artists.

Saturday 8th of April

Alhousseini Anivolla, founder member of Niger's global Desert Blues ambassadors, Etran Finatawa, releases his second solo album. Without any further words or clarifications, there is only one thing to say; his concert on this Saturday night is highly recommended!

BalkanBeats comes back in our city for this month's issue. In April our beloved Piranha recording artist and BalkanBeats' father, Robert Soko, presents Ticvaniu Mare. The Berlin-based Balkan band will take you in a musical journey through Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. Get ready for some bumps!

Sunday 9th of April

Piranha presents: Mulatu Astatke in Berlin! The "Ethio-Jazz" pioneer and now 73-year-old percussionist, clarinetist and vibraphonist, Mulatu Astatke, has been talking about jazz circles since the 60s and is one of the most influential musicians in Africa. Right on time for our "Addis 1988" vinyl release from Ethio Stars & Tukul Band together with Mulatu Astatke, the music veteran comes in our city to spread the Ethiopian Jazz vibe.

Tuesday 11th of April

Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force are coming back to Berlin, after their succesful concert last year. The thrilling Dakar-Berlin collaboration is entering in a new dynamic phase with their music; having already two acclaimed albums and dozens of international performances. The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar will make the opening of the night.
